My Story
I’m Sterling Fitzwater, and I built this firm to stand between you and the weight of the criminal justice system.
Whether you’re up against a violent felony, a probation violation, or a speeding ticket, the stakes are real — and my job is to protect you. I prepare every case like it’s going to trial, I don’t take shortcuts, and I lead from the front.

That mindset wasn’t learned in a classroom. It was forged through years of leading soldiers as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army National Guard, and tested at Ranger School — one of the toughest leadership programs in the military. With over a decade of service, I know how to operate under pressure, how to make hard calls, and how to keep showing up when others fade out.

Before practicing law, I played Division I football at Tulane University while double majoring, serving as an Army ROTC cadet, and continuing my National Guard service. I graduated with First Team All-Academic honors in the American Athletic Conference — a small reflection of the discipline I carry into every aspect of my work.

At West Virginia University College of Law, I earned CALI Awards for Excellence in Alternate Dispute Resolution and Business Transactions Drafting. I’ve always been drawn to high-pressure environments — and criminal defense is no exception.

If you need an attorney in Bozeman or anywhere in Montana — someone who stays calm under pressure and fights like it matters — you’re in the right place.
